About me

We’ll I’m 25 and studying a Engineering Doctorate in Advanced Snowboard Design at DA-CMT Cranfield University Shrivenham. I am currently in my third year of study and my areas of expertise are vehicle dynamics, bending and modal analysis and composite materials. You can follow me on TWITTER Liza_Brooks :-p

I got a 2:1 B.Eng HONS in mechanical engineering with management from the Royal Military College of Science in 2006. I am responsible for “Deviant 154 – possibly the most indestructable board ever” Jo Telfer.

My FAMELAB 2009 Entry which was less than 24hours Late to be considered! RUBBISHNESS!

I have snowboarded all over the world including Thredbo Australia!

My favourite resort is Morzine and hopefully I will get to spend some time there this coming season! I can’t wait! There are so many more places I want to go snowboarding Scotland and Japan are on this list. I would like to snowboard in USA or Canada as well I hear its great there :)

I don’t just work for True Snowboards I have also got a job working for the ETB on their Engineers make it happen campaign as a visiting lecturer.

If you would like me to come to your school or college – for FREE and talk about why snowboard design is so exciting and why you should consider a career in engineering go HERE. You’ll need to get your tutor to book it for you though and they need to go HERE to do so :)

My other interests include photography, music, gym and keep fit, going out, playing mario Kart on my wii 0387-9207-6666 add me and let me know you did so below with your number always up for a race!…ok so I can’t be engineer and not have a little geek in there! Finally my biggest interest is my baby nephew Justin.

Erm something interesting about me…I am REALLY dyslexic and they didn’t realise till I got to university! But then again so was enstine!

    Hi,
I read your interview with Shred Betties and the article on your reverse camber hypothesis. I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Bataleon Triple Base Technology? Do you think this is more effective than reverse camber, since you can’t just push the camber down?

Thank you very much for your time! I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

…also, the founder of Bataleon, Jørgen Karlsen, has a biophysics degree and supposedly did some extensive research on snowboard properties in the late ’90’s. I was wondering if his papers are available to the public to read? Thanks again!

    Hi Katie,

Glad you read the blog and saw the interview :) With regards TBT, this is a patented technology so if we wanted to use it we would need to pay a licensing fee to Bataleon – assuming they would let us. We would not be able to afford to do this at present so it is not something I have looked into at all. I know what triple base is and the theory of how it works based on what the website says. But thats as far as my knowledge goes. Probably the same level as yours :)

TBT and camber are completely different things as one in lateral and on longitudinal along the board and as you said TBT will not simply flatten out on a hard surface – or at least I gather thats the idea. TBT will in theory cause a pressure concentration in the centre of the snowboard so removing pressure from the edges – making them harder to catch. I know one of the UK mags did an interview with them about it a few months back so perhaps it would be worth trying to get hold of if your interested?

Different things are good in different situations such as the reverse camber being logical for offpiste snowboards. I don’t think the camber makes a difference on hard snow – I am keen to test this with a zero camber snowboard which would be quite easy to do. Keep watching this space for results in the public domain from True on various technologies :)

I’ve not read anything by Mr Karlsen but I will keep my eye out. If you are interested running a search through a library is a good place to start to hunt for papers. Since TBT is patented there might be something out there as people can’t copy it.

    Cheers

Hey I just read an article about you in the Times Magazine, I am currently doing a degree in mechanical engineering at Oxford Brookes and this is EXACTLY what i want to do when i graduate! Just I am more of a Skiing nut, but my hearts in the right place, I was wondering if you had any advice for me and what you found useful to what you do at the moment when you were studying for your degree

    Thank you very much

    Dane

  5. Liza says:

    Hi Dane,

I focused on dynamic mechanics and materials modules. I also did my undergraduate project in conjunction with a snowboard company. You can check it out if you like as its available at the DCMT Cranfield Library :) Its listed in my bibliography which is on this site. There is also a list of some more publications you might find of interest.

Best bet is to try and do a project for your 3rd year dissertation with a company as its real experiance.

I hope you liked the article :D

    Hi Lisa!

Wondering if you would be kind enough to help me.

I’m going to La tania to do a season in nov 2010 and and am considering buying my first board soon as its approaching the end of season sale. Iv been spending hours researching different boards and designs but it’s a bit mind blowing!

Hears a little bit of info about me which i hope will help you narrow down your decision.

I’m 21 and from Salisbury in Wiltshire. I am a keen and confident surfer, never snowboarded or skied before. I’m going to put a lot of hard work and time into getting as good as i can on the board. I’m confident i will grasp the basics quickly as i have good balance and coordination and will have lesions on the dry slopes before i get out there. I will spend 3-4 days a week snowboarding for 5 months.

Not bothered about the price of the board, as long as i know im getting a good deal.

Would be much appreciated if you can help.

    Hope all is well.

    Many thanks.

  7. Liza says:

    Hi Jack,

In order to specify a snowboard I need to know about your weight, height and boot size. But bearing in mind you want to spend a whole season riding then I would recommend the True Expression which suits your size – provided your not bigger than a size 10/11 boot dependent on snowboard length you require as they each have different widths.

    I hope this helps.
